Winning the title of new artist of the year at the 2023 CMA Awards, Jelly Roll shared more than just gratitude in his acceptance speech. The seasoned 39-year-old country singer, whose victory was announced by Lady A at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 8), delivered an inspiring message urging fans to persist in their dreams, regardless of age.
Amid cheers from the live audience, Jelly Roll, accompanied by a kiss for his wife Bunnie Xo and a hug for fellow nominee Zach Bryan, ascended the stage to the tune of his performance with Wynonna Judd, "Need a Favor," which kicked off the awards ceremony.
Expressing his appreciation for his loved ones and fellow nominees, including Parker McCollum, Megan Moroney, and Hailey Whitters, Jelly Roll also complimented Zach Bryan, declaring him "one of the hottest things on Earth, not just country music."
Turning his attention to his fans, Jelly Roll delivered a passionate message: “Most importantly, there’s something poetic about a 39-year-old man winning new artist of the year. I don’t know where you’re at in your life or what you’re going through, but I want to tell you to keep going, baby. I want to tell you, ‘Success is on the other side,’” he exclaimed, his voice rising with conviction. “I want to tell you, ‘It’s going to be OK!’ I want to tell you that the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror for a reason, because what’s in front of you is so much more important than what’s behind you!”
The artist concluded his speech with a spirited call to action: “Let’s party, Nashville!” proudly lifting his trophy as the arena erupted in a standing ovation.
Jelly Roll's triumph in the new artist category was just one of his five nominations at the CMA Awards, where he also contended for single of the year and music video of the year for “Need a Favor,” along with male vocalist of the year and musical event of the year. Additionally, he is a finalist in multiple categories at the upcoming 2023 Billboard Music Awards, including top new artist and top rock artist. The BBMAs will be streamed on BBMAs.watch and the Billboard and BBMAs social channels on Nov. 19.
The 2023 CMA Awards, hosted by Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning, unfolded live on ABC.
