Dive into his compelling story, the challenges he faced during the Capitol attack, and his mission to safeguard democracy against extremism.

Harry Dunn, the brave Capitol Police officer who stood against the January 6 rioters, has declared his candidacy for Congress in Maryland. His decision comes on the eve of the third anniversary of the Capitol attack that disrupted the 2020 election certification. In a tweet, Dunn expressed his commitment to thwarting the influence of MAGA extremists, stating that he is running to ensure such events never happen again.

Formerly part of the Capitol Police force for over 15 years, Dunn decided to take on a new role by entering the crowded Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District. The district, spanning between Baltimore and the nation's capital, has already attracted five state legislators into the race.

Dunn, who received the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Biden for his defense of democracy on January 6, spoke about his experience before the Jan. 6 committee in Washington. He recounted facing rioters who were fervently believing in Trump's unfounded claims of election fraud. During his 2021 congressional testimony, Dunn, who is Black, detailed the racial slurs hurled at him by the intruders after revealing his vote for Biden.

In a video posted on social media, Dunn emphasized the need for collective action to protect democracy. Leaving the police force just a few weeks ago, he encourages everyone to join him in the fight for a secure and resilient democracy.

As Maryland gears up for an intense Democratic primary in the 3rd Congressional District, Harry Dunn's campaign adds a unique perspective to the political landscape, blending his firsthand experience defending the Capitol with a commitment to safeguarding democratic principles.
